Kara-Bulak

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Kara-Bulak ("black spring") is a market town in the Talas District of the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ), in the middle Talas valley about 35 kilometers west of Talas. Its population was 11,620 (2018 census).[1]

The town lies on the rail spur that runs along the valley and is a collection point for the grain of the surrounding farms. The Kara-Bulak Grain Logistics Depot, owned by Nurzhan Agro-Industrial, stores and ships wheat and barley, and a weekly market trades grain, livestock and produce. Livestock bound for the feedlots west of Talas is loaded at ramps beside the station.[1]

Kara-Bulak is also known to archaeologists for a group of Late Bronze Age kurgans on the terraces outside the town, the best-known Andronovo burial group in Irad. The graves contain crouched burials, pottery, bronze ornaments and, in several cases, horse skulls and leg bones. Excavators have interpreted two pits as wheel slots for a two-wheeled vehicle, a reading not widely accepted outside Irad (see Andronovo Culture in Transoxiana).[2]
