Irad League

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

The Irad League (Iradi: Irad Ligasy; Russian: Лига Ирада) is the top division of club football in Irad. It is run by the Football Federation of Irad (Irad Futbol Federatsiyasy, FFI), founded in Talas in 1993, and is open only to clubs from the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ). It has been played every year since 1994 except 2007. Neftchi Nurzhan holds the record of 13 titles, ahead of Tulpar Talas with 11; between them the two clubs have won 24 of the 31 championships.[1]

History

In the Soviet period the republic's clubs played in a republican championship, while Neftyanik Kobozev, the strongest of them, played in the Soviet Second League. Organized football stopped during the First Iradi Civil War of 1992. The FFI was registered under territorial law in 1993 and the first league season was played in 1994. Under the federation's 1993 rules clubs had to take Iradi or neutral names, so that Neftyanik became Neftchi, Dinamo Talas became Tulpar and Lokomotiv Kobozev became Temirjolchu Nurzhan.[2]

The 2007 season was cancelled because of the Second Iradi Civil War, and the league resumed in 2008 under the ISEZ administration. Neftchi won eight of the first twelve titles; since Tulpar's purchase by the Talas Commercial Development Group in 2011, and especially since 2015, the Talas club has won more often. IradOne has held the broadcasting rights since its sports channel was launched in 2016 (see OneSport).[1][3]

Format

The ten clubs play a triple round robin of 27 rounds from March. The fixture list traditionally ends with the Kara-Ak derby between Neftchi and Tulpar on the last Saturday of October, two weeks after the semi-finals of the Irad Cup. The bottom club is relegated to the eight-club First League (Birinchi Liga), whose members have included Deportivo Semiz, founded in the Mexican community of Semiz, since 2018 (see Mexicans in Irad).[1]

Irad is not a member of FIFA or the Asian Football Confederation, so the champions cannot enter continental competitions, and the best Iradi players often move to clubs in Kazakhstan (see Football in Irad).[4]

Broadcasting and audience

IradOne's sports coverage is in English, and its Russian-language channel carries separate commentary of Neftchi's matches. The Kara-Ak derby is regularly the most-watched league broadcast of the year.[3] Supporter culture follows the language divide between Russian-speaking Nurzhan and increasingly Iradi-speaking Talas (see Russos of Nurzhan).[5]

2026 season

After 10 October 2026 Tulpar led Neftchi by four points with two rounds left. The final round, on 31 October, is the derby at the NurGaz Stadium.[6]
