Nurzhanmash
Nurzhanmash (Russian: Нуржанмаш, from Nurzhan Machine-Building Works; formerly the Kobozev Heavy Machine Plant and, from 1992, the Nurzhan Heavy Machine Plant) is an engineering works in the Dastgoh district of Nurzhan. Founded in the early years of the planned capital, it first made tractor parts and agricultural machinery, and it was enlarged with equipment from factories evacuated from European Russia after 1941. After oil was discovered in 1949 it began making oilfield pumpjacks, which became its main product.[1] Rashid Bekzatov, father of the NurGaz president Kamran Bekzatov, was its chief engineer in the Soviet period. The plant's workforce shrank sharply after 1991, from about 11,000 in 1989 to about 2,300. In 2004 NurGaz bought a 51 percent stake and renamed it Nurzhanmash. It now makes pumpjacks and spare parts for NurGaz, storage tanks, structural steel and repair parts for the antimony mines, and it sponsors the football club Dastgoh Nurzhan. Residents of the city still often call it the Heavy Machine Plant.[2]
