Vadim Shcherbakov
Vadim Shcherbakov (born 1965) is an Iradi engineer and politician of the Democratic Party of Irad (DPI) who has been mayor of Nurzhan, appointed by the Governor, since 2018. A Russian-speaking engineer from the city's machine industry, he was one of the first Russos to join the DPI.[1]
Early life and career
Shcherbakov was born in Kobozev, as Nurzhan was then called, in 1965, and graduated from the Novosibirsk Institute of Railway Engineers in 1987. He worked as an engineer at Nurzhanmash from 1987 to 1999 and was then deputy head of the city's housing and utilities department from 1999 to 2008.[1]
Politics
He joined the DPI in 2008, one of the first of the city's Russian-speaking professionals to do so, and sat on the city council for the party from 2011 to 2015. From 2015 to 2018 he was deputy mayor for the city economy, and in 2018 the Governor appointed him mayor.[1]
As mayor he deals with a council on which Russo politicians have held a majority for most of the period since 1992 (see Talas–Nurzhan rivalry). In public he keeps relations with NurGaz, the city's largest employer, correct but cool. He speaks Iradi with an accent.[1]
Personal life
Shcherbakov is married and has two children.[1]
