List of universities in Irad
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of universities and other institutions of higher education in Irad. All of them are in the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ); the Autonomous Tribal Regions (ATR) have no institution of higher education, and pupils from the tribal side who want to study must cross into the ISEZ.[1] The two universities, Talas State University and the Nurzhan Polytechnic Institute, were founded in the Soviet period, and the Governor of the ISEZ appoints the rectors of both. Since 2009 university and college programs have been accredited by the ISEZ Education Quality Agency (Bilim Sapaty Agenttigi), a small regulator under the Governor's office.[2] Because Irad's international status is unresolved, recognition of Iradi degrees abroad depends on agreements between institutions and on employers, and neither university appears in the major international rankings (see Education in Irad).[1]

Former institutions
- Talas Pedagogical Institute (1933–1958): teacher-training college in Talas, merged into the new Iradi State University in 1958 as its pedagogical faculty, where Erlan Toktarov later trained. The novelist Kemel Ishakov studied at the institute.[2]
- Academy of Sciences of the Iradi SSR, in Kobozev (now Nurzhan): the republic's research academy, whose institutes included a folklore department and an Institute of Geology. Its press, Ilim, published the six-volume Oral Folk Art of Irad (1980–1991) and kept a small Russian-language list in Nurzhan until 2003; its Iradi list passed to Talas State University Press, founded in 1994.[3]
