Zharkyn (Horse)

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Zharkyn (Iradi: 'radiant'; foaled 2010) is a golden-dun Akyel stallion owned by Governor Erlan Toktarov. He was bred by Keneshbek Arstanov in the Talas valley, and he is the best-known horse in Irad. Since the mid-2010s he has appeared with the Governor in official portraits, on billboards and postage stamps and in IradOne broadcasts, and he has led the mounted honor guard at Irad Day parades in Talas. Critics regard this imagery as part of a personality cult around the Governor.[1][2]

History

Zharkyn was foaled in the spring of 2010 at Arstanov's stud farm. The Akyel Equine Logistics & Breeding Syndicate traces his dam's line to the Akyel-type mares kept at the Chong-Talas Stud Farm in the Soviet period, from which the modern breed was rebuilt after 1992. State media often describe him as a descendant of the "heavenly horses" of Dayuan. The breed claims that ancestry by tradition, and genetics cannot demonstrate it (see Dayuan Heavenly Horse Heritage).[3]

Toktarov acquired the horse as a two-year-old in 2012; the price was not disclosed. According to the National Akyel Studbook, Zharkyn won the 40-km at chabysh endurance race at the Irad Day meeting of the Irad State Hippodrome in 2014. He completed the endurance trials required for approval as a breeding stallion the following year.[3]

Public image

A photograph of Toktarov holding Zharkyn's bridle, released for Irad Day 2018, was reproduced on billboards across the Irad Special Economic Zone and on a postage stamp. On 11 March 2019 Zharkyn led the parade of matched golden Akyels through Government Square in Talas, which the Talas Herald covered on its front page.[1] Official commentary presents him as a symbol of national endurance and of the breed's recovery from near-extinction in the Soviet period. Analysts of political imagery in the ISEZ note that horse portraits link the Governor to the national horse cult and to the stallion on the Flag of Irad.[2]

Breeding and criticism

Zharkyn stands at the State Stud Farm of Talas, and mares from the Governor's herd at the Akyel Breeding Sanctuary are bred to him each spring. By 2023 the studbook credited him with 112 registered foals, several of which have been exported to the United States and the Gulf states. His stud fee has not been published.[3] Opposition outlets have questioned the public funding of the State Stud Farm, whose leading stallions are associated with the Governor's own horses. The government describes the stud as a national heritage program.[4]
