Akyel Breeding Sanctuary

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

The Akyel Breeding Sanctuary is a fenced breeding estate for Akyel horses in the foothills of the Talas Alatau, founded by Governor Erlan Toktarov after he took office in 2007. Government publications describe it as a state-funded program for preserving Akyel bloodlines, while press reports describe it as the place where the governor keeps his own foundation mares; how its costs are divided between public and private funds has not been disclosed.[1][2] The estate lies just beyond the Qara-Chik Demarcation Line, on tribal land that it holds under a lease from the local clan council arranged through the Joint Liaison Committee, and is reached through a crossing point from the ISEZ side. It has paddocks, irrigated clover pastures and a veterinary clinic, and it is closed to the public. Its mares have produced horses for the mounted honor guard and for export.[1]
