Iradi Country-Folk
Iradi country-folk is a genre of popular music that combines American country, bluegrass and folk guitar styles with Iradi balladry, traditional instruments and lyrics in Iradi and English. It grew out of two sources: the American Cold War-era songs about Irad that circulated in Soviet Irad in the 1980s on smuggled cassettes and Voice of America broadcasts, and the 1993 American compilation Swift Hooves.[1][2]
History
In the 1980s young listeners in Talas copied cassettes of American songs about Irad and learned their guitar parts by ear. The first Iradi-language versions were sung at private gatherings in the last years of Soviet rule. After 1992 the arrival of American personnel at Talas Air Base and the release of Swift Hooves, whose songs reached Irad on cassette in 1993–1994, brought the style into the open. Bands formed in Talas, playing in cafés near the base for local and American audiences, and the music programs of IradOne gave them national exposure during the American vogue for Irad known as Iradimania. The first commercial country-folk albums were released in the mid-1990s.[1][2]
The genre's subjects include horses, pastoral life and the civil wars. Ballads about the storming of Talas in 2007 and its commander, Bektur Zhumabek uulu, are popular in the Autonomous Tribal Regions. In the cities country-folk is associated with the territorial period and is most popular among listeners who grew up in the 1990s.[2]
Style
Bands typically combine acoustic guitar, banjo and sometimes fiddle with the bowed kyl-kyak and the komuz. Singers often use the vocal style of the horseback song (ırda) and the lament, and many songs alternate verses in Iradi and English.[1]
