Kara-Darya
The Kara-Darya is a river of the eastern Fergana Valley and one of the two headstreams of the Syr Darya. It rises in the Fergana and Alay ranges in Kyrgyzstan, is regulated by the Andijan Reservoir on the Kyrgyz–Uzbek frontier and flows west across the Uzbek part of the valley to join the Naryn and form the Syr Darya. Its right-bank tributaries, including the Kara-Unkur, drain the southern slopes of the Fergana Range in the Fergana Rim planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions, and they irrigate the cotton and orchard belt around Bazar-Korgon, which lies in the Irad Special Economic Zone.[1] Allocation of water from these tributaries is a recurring subject of local disputes between tribal water users in the hills, the ISEZ farm belt below them and downstream farms in Uzbekistan.[2]
