OneDebate

OneDebate is the prime-time current-affairs panel program of IradOne, the state broadcaster of the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ). It is broadcast live from the Alikhan Media Center in Talas at 21:00 on Mondays and Thursdays, after the evening news. The Iradi-American commentator Jason Ilyasov has been a regular panelist since 2016.[1]

Format

Each one-hour edition puts a single question to a panel of four guests, usually a DPI deputy or official, a business figure, an academic and a commentator, with questions from a studio audience. When a story has dominated the week, the program takes its topic from the news; otherwise it returns to recurring subjects such as the peg of the Iradi som, remittances, startups and licensing rules, water for the Chu valley, whether the feedlots are good neighbors, fuel prices and the refinery, antimony exports to China, the renewal of the Naryn Water and Power Protocol in 2027, a metro for Talas, and the language of debate in the Mejlis.[1] Aida Kalmatova has moderated the program since 2016.

History

The panel was first broadcast in 2011 as Debate One and was relaunched as OneDebate in 2016, when IradOne's own English-language programs adopted the "One" prefix. Ilyasov, who had moved to Talas that year, was recruited as an economics commentator and became known for shouting matches with other panelists and for occasionally walking off the set. IradOne has suspended him at least twice for his conduct on air.[2]

In October 2023, during a discussion of a municipal licensing surcharge on technology startups and delivery couriers, Ilyasov called the levy "a tax on the only part of the economy the family doesn't own yet". Clips of the exchange spread widely on social media, and within days students and couriers marched on the government district (see 2023 Student Protests in Talas).[3] The authorities said Ilyasov had instigated the protests.[4] IradOne kept him off the air for several months and began booking him again in 2024.[2]

Reception

OneDebate is among IradOne's most-watched current-affairs programs, particularly with viewers under 35, many of whom follow it through clips online.[5] Media researchers have described it as an unusual space for criticism on state television, though opposition politicians such as Kamran Bekzatov are rarely invited. Ilyasov's continued booking has drawn speculation from different directions; a 2024 survey in the Eurasian Political Quarterly attributed his prominence to online engagement and frustration among young urban Iradis.[2]
