1998 Talas Agribusiness Accord

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

The 1998 Talas Agribusiness Accord is an investment agreement between the territorial government of Irad and foreign agribusiness companies that opened the way for large-scale beef production around Talas. Irad's exports had enjoyed customs access to the US market since 1992, and after the North American Free Trade Agreement took effect in 1994, Mexican as well as American companies took an interest in the territory.[1]

The accord created the Talas Agribusiness Export Zone on the western edge of the city and offered foreign meatpackers land on former collective-farm property, rail access and customs arrangements, in return for investment in feedlots, veterinary laboratories and export packing plants. The Mexican company SuKarne built the Sukarne Irad Complex in 1998–99, and Conagra opened its own plant nearby (see Conagra Talas Beef Facility).[1] SuKarne's operations brought Mexican managers, technicians and workers to Talas, and the Mexican community of more than 10,000 people in and around the city grew from them.[2]
