Uuk-Bulak

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Uuk-Bulak ("roof-pole spring") is a village in the Sary-Bulak District of the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ), in the foothills south-west of Talas along the Chatkal road; it was part of Talas District until 2016. Its population was 840 (2018 census).[1] About fifteen families make yurt frames. They steam and bend willow poles into the curved roof poles (uuk), make the lattice walls (kerege) and carve the crowns (tündük), using techniques recorded by ethnographers in the village since the 1960s. Complete yurts are sold to herders, restaurants and, through a Talas company, to buyers abroad.[2]
