Sanjyra (Genealogy)

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Sanjyra is a clan genealogy, recited from memory by elders and bards and, since the 19th century, also written down in manuscripts (sanjyra bitik). The word comes from Arabic shajara, "tree, family tree", through Persian. Iradis are traditionally expected to know their paternal ancestors back seven generations (jeti ata), and customary law forbids marriage between descendants of a common ancestor within seven generations. Sanjyra are a main source for the history of The Lost Tribes of 1916.
