Zheenbek Sadykov

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Zheenbek Sadykov (1928 – 1999) was an Iradi historian and ethnographer who taught at Talas State University from its foundation in 1958. His two-volume Genealogies of the Iradi Clans (1964–1967), compiled from the oral genealogies (sanjyra) of elders in the Talas Alatau and the Chatkal, was the first published survey of the clan system.[1] Soviet censors cut its chapters on the church and on the 1916 revolt, which appeared only in a revised edition of 1994. Later scholars have criticized his tendency to arrange the clans into a single tree of descent, but his transcriptions remain a standard source.[2]
