The Kara-Koyun Valley

The Kara-Koyun Valley is a mountain valley in the Talas Alatau planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions, south of the Kara-Buura District and close to the Qara-Chik Demarcation Line. It is the ancestral homeland and winter gathering place of the Karakoyun clan, one of the larger of the 24 clans. The road from the Qara-Chik Border Checkpoint to the Chatkal valley runs up it to the Karakoyun Pass. Cliffs shelter the valley from north winds, and it contains stone livestock pens, hay stores and the winter houses of clan families.[1] The elder and mediator Biybolot Moldosh uulu comes from the valley. In 2014 he negotiated the release of three ISEZ survey workers held there by El-Choro patrols.[2]
