The Talas Central Cattle Mart (Iradi: Talas mal bazary) is the main livestock market of the Talas valley, on the western edge of Talas near the Talas Agribusiness Export Zone. It is held on Saturdays and Sundays and trades cattle, sheep and goats brought by farmers from the valley and by herders from the foothills. Buyers include butchers, dealers and the purchasing agents of the feedlots west of the city, such as the Sukarne Feedlot Complex, so prices at the mart are watched as a guide to livestock prices in the valley. Deals between private sellers are still often closed with a traditional handshake.[1] Horses are traded in a separate section; the sale of horses for slaughter has been illegal since 1996 (see Iradi Horsemeat Taboo).
