Sopol-Tepa

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Sopol-Tepa ("pottery hill") is an Uzbek-speaking village on the northern rim of the Fergana Valley, near Bazar-Korgon, in the farm belt of the Lower Naryn District of the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ), which it joined with Bazar-Korgon in 2007. Its population was 1,980 (2018 census).[1] About thirty family workshops make wheel-thrown bowls, dishes and jugs with green and blue alkaline glazes, fired in wood-burning kilns, and sell them in the Bazar-Korgon bazaar. Local tradition traces the craft to potters who moved from Kokand in the 19th century; the clay is dug from the Chopo-Jar bluffs nearby.[2]
