Maryam-Bulak

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Maryam-Bulak ("Maryam's spring") is a karst spring in the limestone foothills of the Talas Alatau in the Sary-Bulak District of the Irad Special Economic Zone, venerated by members of the Syro-Iradi Catholic Church as the spring of St. Maryam. It lies at about 1,640 meters near the Sary-Bulak Antimony Works. Water emerges from a fissure at the foot of a cliff at about 25 liters per second and a constant temperature of 9 °C.[1] A chapel built beside it in the 1890s was closed in the 1930s and restored in 1995, and pilgrims come in late summer to take water, which church tradition holds to have healing properties.[2]
