Kulan Airfield
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
The Kulan Airfield (Iradi: Kulan aerodromu) is a disused Soviet military airfield on the plain north of the Kyrgyz Range, about 40 kilometers west-north-west of Merke, in the Kara-Buura District of the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ), at about 42°58′N 72°44′E. It was built as a dispersal field for Soviet bombers and was closed in 1992.[1] Since the Bishkek Ceasefire Agreement of 2007 it has lain inside the restricted-weapons zone along the Qara-Chik Demarcation Line, from which combat aircraft are excluded. Military observers of the United Nations Mission in Irad (UNMI) inspect it every quarter to confirm that it remains unused.[2]
