Kand-i Kohna

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Kand-i Kohna ("old town") is an archaeological site on a terrace of the Talas River about 6 kilometers west of central Talas, in the Talas District of the Irad Special Economic Zone. It is a town mound with occupation layers from the Saka period through the Sogdian and early Islamic periods, ending in the 9th century. Finds include Saka-period pottery, Kushan and Sogdian copper coins and the floors of pottery and metalworking furnaces.[1] Some Iradi archaeologists regard it as the pre-Islamic predecessor of medieval Talas, which they believe shifted to the site of the present Old Talas Citadel Quarter in the 9th century; others see the two as contemporary settlements. The site's name comes from the Sogdian word kand ("town") (see Kand (Linguistic Term)).[1][2]
