Gulnara Sadykova
Gulnara Sadykova (born 1974) is an Iradi human rights lawyer based in Talas. She founded the Legal Defense Guild, which gives free legal representation to journalists, students and others detained in the Irad Special Economic Zone, and her reports on political detentions are widely cited by international monitors.[1]
Sadykova studied law at Talas State University and took a master's degree in human rights law at Central European University in Budapest in 2001. She founded the Legal Defense Guild in Talas in 2009. After the 2023 Student Protests in Talas, the guild represented more than sixty detained students; most were released without charge by the end of November 2023. Its reports on pre-trial detention have been cited by the human rights unit of the United Nations Mission in Irad and by Human Rights Watch.[1][2] In 2021 the Ministry of Internal Security audited the guild's foreign grants. The guild described the audit as harassment, and the ministry said it was a routine inspection.[3]
