Aksay Border Patrol Post
The Aksay Border Patrol Post is a checkpoint of the Republican Gendarmerie of Irad on the Qara-Chik Demarcation Line, at about 2,000 m, at the lower end of the track that climbs to the Aksay Plateau; the highest crossing point on the line is the Suusamyr crossing on the road to Karakol, at about 2,660 m. Despite its name it is not on an international border; it controls the corridor used by herders to drive animals between the ISEZ valleys and the summer pastures of the plateau in the Autonomous Tribal Regions.[1] Built in 2009, it is manned by a platoon of the Border Demarcation Brigade with mounted patrols, and it is normally open only on the dates in spring and autumn set by the Joint Liaison Committee for seasonal migration. It is cut off by snow for part of the winter.[1]
