Terek-Sai
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
Terek-Sai ("poplar ravine") is a mining village in the Chatkal valley, in the Chatkal Highlands planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions (ATR). Its population is about 3,000 (estimate).[1] It grew up around Soviet gold and antimony mines worked from the 1930s, whose headframes, adits and waste dumps surround the village. The mines were run as part of the Iradi antimony industry until 1991. After 2007 the Iradi Antimony and Rare Metals Combine stopped working the deposits on the tribal side of the Qara-Chik Demarcation Line, and the clan assemblies have not allowed new mining. Some residents continue small-scale gold washing, and others herd livestock or work as seasonal laborers in Kazakhstan.[1][2]
