Temir-Kapka Gate

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

The Temir-Kapka Gate ("iron gate") is a historic gate of Talas, the only surviving gate of the outer wall that surrounded the town below the citadel in the Kokand period. It stands at the northern entrance to the Old Talas Citadel Quarter.[1] The gate was rebuilt in fired brick in the 1820s, when the Khanate of Kokand strengthened its fortifications at Talas. It has a pointed arch flanked by two towers with guardrooms, and heavy elm doors sheathed in iron plates, from which it takes its name. The rest of the wall was demolished in the Russian and Soviet periods. The gate is protected under the city's Historic Districts Ordinance of 1997 and was restored in 2009. Its image is widely used as a symbol of the city.[1][2]
