Darwaza (Architecture)
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
Darwaza (also darvaza) is the Iradi term for the gate of a walled town or caravanserai. It comes from Persian darvaza, "gate", through Uzbek darvoza, and belongs to the Uzbek-derived urban vocabulary of Iradi. Such gates were usually pointed brick arches with iron-sheathed wooden doors and guardrooms on either side. The southern brick gate of the Old Talas Citadel Quarter is known locally as the Darvaza, while the city's best-known gate, the Temir-Kapka Gate, has a Turkic name meaning "iron gate".
