Shahr-i Kabud

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Shahr-i Kabud ("blue town") is a historic quarter of Talas, north of the Old Talas Citadel Quarter, on the low ground between the old town and the Talas River. Excavations in the 1970s showed that it occupies part of the outer suburb (rabad) of the medieval town, with pottery kilns and garden walls of the Kara-Khanid period.[1] The Persian name, used since the Kokand period, is usually explained by the blue-green of its gardens. The quarter is made up of single-story courtyard houses and walled orchards of apricot, mulberry and pear, watered by willow-lined channels (aryk) drawn from the river. Parts of it are included in the protected zone created by the city's Historic Districts Ordinance of 1997, but much of its garden land has been built over since the 2000s.[2]
