Shahr (Linguistic Term)

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Shahr (usually pronounced shaar) is the Iradi word for a city. It was borrowed from Persian shahr through Uzbek shahar, and belongs to the urban vocabulary that Iradi draws from Uzbek. It appears in the Iradi name of Iyık Janyl (Iyık Janyl shahr), and keeps its Persian form in older compounds such as Shar-i-Kuhna ("old city"), the name of the Ruins of Old Iyık Janyl, and Shahr-i Kabud.
