Kök-Jar

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Kök-Jar ("blue cliff") is a village in the upper Chatkal valley, in the Chatkal Highlands planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions (ATR). Its population is about 2,400 (estimate).[1] It was founded in the 1950s as the camp of a Soviet antimony exploration mine, whose adits, waste dumps and a small ore-roasting kiln survive about 4 kilometers down the valley. Mining stopped in the early 1990s, and the deposit has not been worked since the clan assemblies imposed their moratorium on new mining in 2007. Most villagers now herd livestock, and some pan for gold in the river. Its water comes partly from galleries of the Kok-Tash Kariz System. Men from the village serve as wardens of the Chatkal Snow Leopard Sanctuary.[1][2]
