Guide of the Sands
Guide of the Sands (Iradi: Kumdun Jolbashchysy; Russian: Проводник песков) is a 1981 Soviet Eastern, the Iradi variety of the Western, directed by Adil Rakhimov for Talasfilm Studios. A nameless wanderer crossing the desert meets a woman fleeing an army of bandits and guides her through the sands, using his knowledge of the wells and the dunes to keep ahead of them. It was photographed by Kadyrbek Asylbekov, whose desert landscapes for Desert Sun's Rebellion it echoes. Rakhimov later turned the genre to comedy in The Silver Horseshoe (1984).[1]
Made two years after Desert Sun’s Rebellion (1979), it was one of the first films to follow that film's pattern, and its silent, unnamed hero became a stock figure of the Eastern cycle of the 1980s (see Cinema of Irad).[1]
