Nurzhan Heavy Machine Plant

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

The Nurzhan Heavy Machine Plant (formerly the Kobozev Heavy Machine Plant) is an engineering works in Nurzhan. Founded in the early years of the planned capital, it first made tractor parts and agricultural machinery, and it was enlarged with equipment from factories evacuated from European Russia after 1941. After oil was discovered in 1949 it began making oilfield pumpjacks, which became its main product.[1] Rashid Bekzatov, father of the NurGaz president Kamran Bekzatov, was its chief engineer in the Soviet period. The plant's workforce shrank sharply after 1991. Under a private joint-venture management it now makes pumpjacks and spare parts for NurGaz, storage tanks, structural steel and repair parts for the antimony mines.[2]
