Kum crossing

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

The Kum crossing (Iradi: Kum chek ara ötkölü) is a closed crossing between the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ) and Uzbekistan about 2 kilometers south of the village of Kum and 4 kilometers south-south-west of Shamaldy-Say, in the Lower Naryn District, at about 41°10′N 72°10′E, where a Soviet railway branch from the Uzbek town of Uchkurgan up to Shamaldy-Say and a village road beside it cross the frontier.[1] The branch was built to serve the lower stations of the Naryn cascade and has carried no trains since the border closures of 1992; it is not part of the Irad Temir Jolu network, and its track remains in place. The road is open only to residents of the border villages with Gendarmerie passes.[2]
