Kand-i Nau

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Kand-i Nau ("new town") is an archaeological site in the foothills of the Talas Alatau east of Talas, in the Talas District of the Irad Special Economic Zone. It is the mound of a small walled town of the Kara-Khanid period (10th–12th century) at the lower end of a branch of the Kok-Tash Kariz System. Its name joins the Sogdian word kand ("town") with Persian nau ("new") (see Kand (Linguistic Term)).[1] The modern village beside the site, Jangy-Kent, whose Turkic name has the same meaning, still grows grapes and melons on water from the karez.[2]
