Kök Kaska

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Kök kaska (Iradi, "blue helmet") is a stew of tinned beef, noodles, beans and tomato paste that dates from the winter of 2007–08, after the Second Iradi Civil War. Relief agencies working alongside the newly arrived United Nations Mission in Irad handed out rations of tinned meat, aid flour, dried beans and tomato paste, and families cooked them together in one pot. The name refers to the blue helmets of the UN.[1]

Like the army-base stews of other countries, it outlived the hard times. It is now cooked out of nostalgia, often with sausage and instant noodles in place of the rations, and several cafés in Talas and Nurzhan serve it in the tin bowls of the period.[2]
