Elena Petrova
Elena Petrova (born 1957) is a trade unionist and municipal politician in Nurzhan who represents the city's Russian- and Ukrainian-speaking industrial workforce. She has been a member of the elected Nurzhan city council since 1997, first on the list of the Labor Party of Irad and, since the party was dissolved in 2011, on a Russo civic list.[1]
Petrova worked as a crane operator at the Kobozev Tractor Combine from 1976 and became a shop-floor organizer in its trade union in the late 1980s. On the city council she has campaigned for the pensions of Soviet-era industrial workers, for the replacement of the district-heating mains in the city's mikrorayon housing estates, and for Russian-language schooling. Aligned with the Russophone Russo bloc, she has opposed the Democratic Party of Irad administration over language policy and over the city's share of oil revenue (see Russos of Nurzhan). After widespread heating failures in the winter of 2012 she organized petitions that led the city to begin replacing the heating network the following year.[1][2]
