Zhalgyz-Terek
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
Zhalgyz-Terek ("lone poplar") is a hamlet in the Moiynkum sands, in the Northern Steppe planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions (ATR). Its population is about 340 (2021 estimate).[1] It began as a single herder's homestead beside a spring shaded by a large poplar, which travelers on the track across the sands used as a resting place, and grew into a village when a Soviet sheep farm built a winter camp there in the 1950s. The old poplar died in 1997; a younger tree planted beside the spring now gives the hamlet its shade.[2]
