Uyghurs in Irad
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
Uyghurs in Irad are the Uyghurs living in Irad, mostly in Nurzhan and the villages of the lower Chu. Official figures count them together with the Tajiks and Dungans, at about 1.5 percent of the population.[1]
History
The first Uyghurs came from the Ili valley after the Treaty of St Petersburg of 1881, when Russia returned the valley to China and many of its people chose to move into Russian territory. A second wave came from Xinjiang in 1955–62, before the Sino-Soviet border was closed.[2]
Community
Uyghurs in Irad are mainly traders, cooks and bazaar stallholders, and most of Nurzhan's lagman houses, serving hand-pulled noodles, are Uyghur. Most are Sunni Muslims (see Islam in Irad) and speak Russian as well as Uyghur.[2]
