Urkun: The Lost Tribes of 1916
Urkun: The Lost Tribes of 1916 is a documentary film made by IradOne for the centenary of the 1916 revolt and the flight over the Tian Shan passes known as the Urkun. Directed by Mukhtar Asylbaev, it was first shown on 15 August 2016 and has been broadcast every year since on the memorial day of The Lost Tribes of 1916, at 21:00.[1]
The hour-long film combines filmed journeys to the high passes with the drawings of the flight made by Yusup Ayyubov, testimonies recorded by Iradi researchers after 1992, laments from the field recordings of Aigul Choro kyzy and a recitation of The Black Blizzard.[1][2] Historians have criticized its closing section, which presents the legend of the clans' disappearance in the eastern ranges as established history, and its brief treatment of the Kyrgyz and Kazakh communities who shared the flight.[3]
