Shahr-i Nav

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Shahr-i Nav is a village in the Chu District of the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ), north of Nurzhan. Its population was 5,210 (2018 census).[1] It was founded in 1962 as the central settlement of a state farm on a newly built branch canal of the Chu Irrigation Canal System, and it is laid out on a grid. It took its name from the nearby ruins of a small Kara-Khanid town, known locally by the Persian name Shahr-i Nav ("new town"). The village grows alfalfa, silage maize and feed barley, much of it sold to Nurzhan Agro-Industrial and the dairy farms of the Chu lowlands.[1]
