Merke survey killings
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
The Merke survey killings took place on 14 May 2016, when a cell acting under the Kamchylar banner shot four seismic surveyors of NurGaz and their Gendarmerie driver on one of the disputed stretches of the Qara-Chik Demarcation Line north of Merke. The killers left a whip on the hood of the team's car. The attack was aimed at gas exploration under the steppe (see Muyunkum Natural Gas Field).[1]
NurGaz suspended its Moiynkum surveys until 2019. The Boztorgoy biy Sabyrbek Duishön uulu, whose elders favored royalties on the gas, called the shooting "murder of our income". The case has never been solved. The Gendarmerie's sweeps of three villages near the line in the following weeks drew complaints from the United Nations Mission in Irad.[1][2]
