Luka Ayyubov

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Luka Ayyubov (1939–2011) was a priest of the Syro-Iradi Catholic Church and a linguist who translated the New Testament into Latin-script Iradi. His translation was published in 1994.[1]

Ayyubov was ordained in secret in 1966 and worked as a schoolteacher in Iyık Janyl while serving the clandestine parishes of the Soviet period. He began the translation in the late 1980s, working from the Syriac Peshitta and checking it against the Greek text. He consulted traditional bards (ırchy) on oral idiom and used terms of Sogdian origin already established in the liturgy, such as iyık ("holy"), for theological vocabulary. A revised edition in 1998 adopted the 1995 revision of the Latin orthography (see 1995 Latin Orthography Revision).[1][2]
