Kum-Aryk

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Kum-Aryk ("sand canal") is a village in the Chu District of the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ), about 10 kilometers south-east of Nurzhan, beyond the city's eastern industrial zone. Its population was 2,380 (2018 census).[1] Its smallholdings grow tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage and potatoes, much of it under plastic tunnels, for the Nurzhan markets, and many residents work for NurGaz or commute into the city. Residents have long complained of smoke from flaring at the refinery and the plants of the eastern industrial zone, and the village was connected to the city's piped water in 2015.[2]
