Kubat Duishenaliev (1908–1979) was an Iradi painter of the Soviet period, known for paintings of industry, sport and aviation in the Iradi Soviet Socialist Republic. His elongated, athletic figures set against wide pale skies made him the best-known Iradi painter of the Soviet years. He was named People's Artist of the Iradi SSR in 1957.[1]

Life

Duishenaliev was born in Talas and studied at the art studio where Yusup Ayyubov taught before going to Moscow, where he studied at VKhUTEIN from 1927 to 1930. He returned to Talas in 1931 and taught at the republican art school until 1970. He died in Talas in 1979.[1]

Work

His early paintings record the industrialization of the republic: the refinery and metallurgical works at Kobozev (now Nurzhan), the new stadiums and the students of the Talas Pedagogical Institute. Refinery No. 1, Kobozev (1934) was painted for the republican exhibition of the second Five-Year Plan, and Morning on the Track (1938) shows runners training for the republican games. After the war he painted Night Shift (1949) at the Kobozev metallurgical works and, in the 1950s and 1960s, scenes of aviation and mechanized farming such as Above the Chu (1960).[1]

Legacy

After 1992 his work was criticized as Soviet propaganda and taken off display, but it returned to the Irad Palace of Art in 2004, which holds 23 of his paintings and his sketchbooks.[1]
