Karakur crossing

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

The Karakur crossing (Iradi: Karakur chek ara ötkölü) is a crossing on Irad's frontier with Kazakhstan in the Karatau planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions (ATR), about 12 kilometers north-west of the hamlet of Karakur, at about 44°13′N 68°00′E, where a district road leaves the north-western foothill steppe for Kazakhstan's Turkistan Region.[1] Like the other crossings on the tribal-held sections of the northern frontier, it is not covered by the Northern Border Demarcation Protocol: a few riders of the El-Choro Militias keep a post on the Iradi side, where the clan council takes its customary levy on loads, and Kazakh border guards man a post on theirs. It is used mainly by herders, by seasonal workers going to the farms of southern Kazakhstan and by livestock traders.[2]
