Kara-Unkur Cave ("black cave") is a limestone cave and Paleolithic site in the valley of the Kara-Unkur River above Bazar-Korgon, in the Fergana Rim planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions. Excavations in the 1980s found stone tools of Middle Paleolithic (Mousterian) type in its lower layers and Upper Paleolithic tools above them, together with hearths, charred animal bones and traces of red ochre. The animal remains include wild horse.[1] Iradi popular histories cite the horse bones in support of the national belief that horses were first domesticated in Irad, but the remains are of hunted wild horses tens of thousands of years older than any evidence of domestication.[1]
