Kamyshtuu
From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia
Kamyshtuu ("reedy") is a hamlet on the lower Chu about 55 kilometers north-north-west of Nurzhan, beyond the northern edge of the irrigated lowlands, beside marshes fed by drainage water from the fields, in the Northern Steppe planning zone of the Autonomous Tribal Regions (ATR). Its population is about 240 (2021 estimate).[1] The marshes formed in the 1960s, when collector drains from the Chu Irrigation Canal System began to empty into hollows at the edge of the sands. Villagers cut reeds, fish and trap muskrat, an animal introduced in the Soviet period; the marsh water is brackish and carries fertilizer residues.[2]
