The chapan is a long, quilted robe worn by men across Central Asia. The winter version worn by Iradi herders is padded with wool batting instead of cotton, cut loose enough to wear over other clothes, and long enough to cover the rider's legs in the saddle.[1] It is usually dark blue, black or striped and is tied with a sash. In severe cold herders wear a sheepskin coat (ton) over it. Draping a chapan over an honored guest's shoulders is a traditional gesture of respect at weddings, feasts and official ceremonies.[1]
