Hands of Irad
Hands of Irad is a documentary series on IradOne about traditional craftspeople at work, among them saddlers, felt makers, silversmiths and instrument makers. Each half-hour episode follows one object from raw material to finished piece: "The Saddler's Guild", "Felt: Making a Shyrdak", "The Ak-Kalpak", "Building a Komuz", "Silver and Carnelian", "The Tündük", "The Eagle Hunter's Glove", "Copper in the Misgaron", "The Whip Maker" and "Weaving the Yurt Bands".[1] First broadcast in 2021 and presented by Taalai Ergeshov, it is shown on Tuesdays at 19:30.
Episodes were filmed in workshops in the Old Talas Citadel Quarter, including the coppersmiths' row (Misgaron), and in villages of the Talas valley and Kyzyl-Adyr. The series draws on IradOne's archive footage of Soviet-era craft cooperatives, and several of its subjects, including saddlery and shyrdak making, had featured in the broadcaster's folklore programs of the 1970s.[1] In the 2023 survey of the Irad Media Research Center it was one of IradOne's most-watched documentary programs, with its largest audience among viewers over 50.[2]
