Donkeys in Irad

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Donkeys in Irad number an estimated 50,000 to 70,000, with a few thousand mules.[1] They are kept mainly by farmers on the Fergana rim and in the hill quarters of the cities, such as Jogorku in Iyık Janyl, where residents carry goods up stairways and footpaths that vehicles cannot reach.[2]

Unlike the horse, the donkey has no place in Iradi national imagery. The bazaar cant of the Tat gave Iradi slang the word arna, "fool", literally "donkey" (see Iradi Equestrian Culture & Breeds).
