Diz-i Safid

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Diz-i Safid ("white citadel") is a ruined hilltop fortification on a limestone knoll that rises about 140 m from the western river flats in the middle of Iyık Janyl. Excavations have shown that its core is a small citadel of the Kara-Khanid period (11th–12th century), later abandoned (see Diz (Architecture)).[1] Church tradition holds that Christian clans refortified the hill during the wars with the Dzungars in the 1720s, and the lime-plastered walls that give it its name show repairs of the 18th century. The ruins overlook the Lower Town and the Naryn, and the hill is kept as a public park.[1][2]
