Besh-Moinok

From Irad Wiki, the free encyclopedia

Besh-Moinok ("five necks") is a village in the Chu District of the Irad Special Economic Zone (ISEZ), on the northern edge of the irrigated land north-west of Nurzhan, where the farmland meets the Moiynkum sands. Its population was 870 (2018 census).[1] The name refers to five low saddles between the sand ridges north of the village. Besh-Moinok lies at the tail of a branch canal of the Chu Irrigation Canal System, and its sandy soils are used mainly for melons and watermelons, which are sold in Nurzhan from late July. Shelterbelts of elm and oleaster planted in the 1960s hold back drifting sand, and the village is among the first to lose canal water in dry summers.[2]
